FAQ
What is a certified or sworn translation?
A certified (or sworn) translation is a translation completed by an officially authorized translator. The translator confirms, with their signature and official stamp, that the translation is a true and accurate representation of the original document.
In other words, it’s a legally recognized translation with an official guarantee of accuracy.
What does a sworn translation into or from Croatian look like?
A sworn translation is delivered as a single bound set that cannot be separated. It typically includes:
- A cover page with formally required information
- The original document or its copy
- The translated document
- A certification statement by the sworn translator
- The translator’s official stamp and signature
- Secure binding with a tricolour thread to prevent tampering
The completed translation is also recorded in the court interpreter’s official register.
When do I need a certified Croatian translation?
You usually need a certified Croatian translation when a document must be submitted to an official institution, court, authority, or business that requires proof that the translation is accurate.
Common situations include:
- Submitting documents to the government or the authorities
- Business tenders and procurement processes
- Contract validation or legal proceedings
- Banking and financial verification
- Recognition of qualifications, diplomas, or certificates
If an institution wants proof that a translation is legally reliable, they will require a certified (sworn) translation.
Who is authorized to provide official Croatian translations?
In Croatia, only sworn court interpreters (sudski tumači) officially appointed by the Ministry of Justice, Public Administration and Digital Transformation can provide certified translations.
They are approved for a specific language and obligated to:
- Translate truthfully and precisely
- Follow official formatting and certification requirements
- Maintain confidentiality and protect sensitive information
What types of documents are typically translated by a certified Croatian translator?
Certified translations are typically required for documents that have legal, financial, administrative, or official value, including:
- Business and corporate documents – company registration documents, financial statements, balance sheets, tender and procurement documentation
- Legal documents – contracts and agreements, powers of attorney, court decisions and submissions
- Personal documents – birth, marriage, and citizenship certificates, ID documents
- Education and professional documents – diplomas, transcripts, professional certificates
